Oldsmobiles with the 'Rocket' engine were automatic-only since 1949. Oldsmobile manual gearbox could not handle the torque of the new engine. Oldsmobile had introduced the 'Futuramic' name in 1948. It offered a modified Cadillac manual gearbox for the V8 models of 1950. The 88 outsold the six-cylinder Olds (76), which was dropped after the 1950 year. Ray Elliot won the 1950 Carrera Panamericana with the 1950 model.
