The Olds Motor Vehicle Co. first manufactured in Lansing, Michigan. Ransom E.Olds founded it in 1897, it produced 425 cars in 1901. In 1902 the company already produced 635 cars. So it was the first high-volume gas-powered auto manufacturer. Oldsmobile was the top-selling car company in the United States for a few years, ca.1903–1904. Ransom Olds finally left the company in 1904. That happened because of a dispute with other people from management. General Motors purchased the company in 1908.

History

In the model year 1940 Oldsmobile was the first car manufacturer to offer a fully automatic transmission. They called it the "Hydramatic", which features four forward speeds. It has a gas pedal and a brake—no clutch pedal. The gear selector is on the steering column. Starting in 1941 Oldsmobile used a two digit model designation. The '60' model was in the lowest price field of Oldsmobile. One can distinguish '60' cars from others, higher priced model lines, because the have less chrome trim. Examples are chrom spears, badhes and chrom lines. The '60' cars had a 6 cylinder Olds engine ('inline-6'). Not a top-performer, they were extremely durable, long-lasting machines.
