1955 Oldsmobile 98 4Dr
The year before the company restyled the 1955 Oldsmobile 98 4Dr cars with new longer and lower body shells. Also added wrap-around windshields and rear windows. Olds increased the wheelbase to 122 inches. Base models were again named simply 88s. Oldsmobile face-lifted the 1955 models: They received a new grille work, taillights and body-side chrome. Power for the 324-cubic-inch Rocket V8 increased to 185 for 88s (and 202 for Super 88s).
Olds introduced the new pillarless four-door hardtop body, dubbed the Holiday sedan at mid-year. This happened for both the 88 and Super 88. The four-door Oldsmobile 88 Holiday, along with the four-door 98 Holiday, were the first four-door hardtops ever produced by Olds. Air conditioning became an option.
History
The company produced the Oldsmobile 98 from 1949 to 1999. From 1950 to 1974 the 88 was the division's top-selling car type. The entry-level models, '88' and 'Dynamic 88' sold very well. The 88 series was also an image leader for Oldsmobile. That is particularly true for the early years (1949–51). Back then it was one of the best performing cars because of its relatively small size and light weight. The advanced overhead-valve high-compression V8 engine also added to this fact. The engine, (designed for the larger C-bodied '98' series), also replaced the straight-8 on the B-bodied 78.
Upholstery choices for 1955 Oldsmobile 98 4Dr were covert and pattern cloth, leather and pattern cloth, leather and nylon, and leather and dimple leather. Oldsmobile moved the optional air conditioning unit to the engine bay instead of the trunk. - The Hydramatic automatic transmission gear selector had an 'S' on it, which was used for better climbing performance. At mid-year, the company introduced the pillarless four-door hardtop body, called the Holiday sedan, in the 98 series.
