A few words about the history and development of the 1949 Cadillac 61 Fastback: Cadillac moved the formerly smaller Series 61 to the Series 62's GM's C-Body. Both were very similar. Design changes came to that body style already in 1948, featuring GM's first new postwar body with styling bits including tail fins inspired by the Lockheed P-38 fighter plane.
History
Changes at Cadillac for 1949 was mostly on engineering - with the arrival of the new overhead valve V8 engine. It had a displacement of 331 cu and produced 160 hp. Only minor appearance changes implemented: A more massive grille treatment with grooved extension panels housing the front parking lights. A change was also the chevron slashes below the tail lamps. Cars in this line didn't have front fender gravel shields and also no rocker panel moldings. Inside the car was more simple interior trim. Standard equipment was upgraded this year with twin back-up lamps mounted on the deck lid latch panel.
Cars of these years are well known for dependability, solid construction and longevity.
