History

Oldsmobile was a brand of American automobiles. Most of its time it was part of General Motors. Ransom E. Olds originally founded it in 1897. During its lifespan it produced ca.35 million vehicles. From these numbers, Olds produced ca.14 mill cars in Lansing MI. GM aligned Olds in the middle of its divisions: Above Chevrolet and Pontiac, along Buick, and below Cadillac. Oldsmobile shut down in 2004. At this time it was the oldest surviving American car maker.

The 88 model type enjoyed a great success. It was even inspiring a popular 1950's slogan, "Make a Date with a Rocket 88". Also a song named "Rocket 88", is often considered the first rock and roll record. - Starting with the trunk-lid emblem of the 1950 model, Oldsmobile would adopt the rocket as its logo, and the 88 name would remain in the Oldsmobile lineup until the late 1990s.
The company presented a large number of variations of the '88' in nomenclature over this long model run: Futuramic, Super, Golden Rocket, Dynamic, Holiday etc.
